Nomenclature and taxonomy of the genera of the Thelephorales are briefly discussed. Characters used to separate genera are analysed and the status of several segregates from Tomentella is discussed; Tomentellastrum and Lazulinospora are not recognized here at the generic level. Descriptive keys to the species are given. The concept of species complexes is used here to indicate groups of species that are closely related and which may need critical examination to re-establish their specific status. It is considered likely that many of these taxa should be distinguished at an infraspecific level. An annotated list of all species described in the genera of the Thelephorales (incl. synonyms) is given
